Robyn Lowndes - Bob Hogben - Jack F Jones - Brian Hogben - Brenda Bryant - Peter Brenchley

Name: Robyn Lowndes

I am trying to find information on my husband's family of Hogbens. His mother was Edith Maude Hogben, her father was Sidney Bennett Hogben and his parents were George Hogben and Mary Bennett. Sidney Hogben was born in 1857 in Kent and died in Sydney in 1930. Occupation Painter. I know little about the family as Sidney's family never spoke about people back in England. His last remaining daughter, Rose, does not remember ever hearing her father speak about his parents.

I found your information fascinating and look forward to more in the future.

I know that they came from the Ulcombe Headcorn area of Kent and that my Grandmother came from Cheriton. I dont know her maiden name. Could it be possible that there could be some family connections? I have no information with regard to my Grandfathers parents and very little about his brothers or sister I think that the names George and Arthur are the brothers names I am not sure of the sisters name my Father and Uncles never spoke about them in any depth. My Grandfathers name was Frederick Walter Hogben and my Grandmothers name was Sarah they had four sons Fredrick, Robert, Athur, and Sydney. They moved from Kent to the east end of London sometime in the late 1800's or early 1900's although we still had family links in Kent until roughly late 1940's

During the past year, I have been researching the Hogben family name, to which I am connected through my maternal grandmother, who was Martha Emily Hogben. As I remember, she did not seem to know much about her ancestors, but did tell me that her father, John Iggulden Hogben (1825-1885) originated from the Folkestone area. I subsequently discovered that John Iggulden's father was John Hogben who married Jane, a daughter of William(1771-1852) and Mary Hogben(nee Richards) of Newington-next-Hythe on October 27th 1825 at St.Nicholas Church, Newington. The Marriage Bond & Allegation shows the bridegroom's age as 27 and also that he was a farmer at Lyminge. As the bride was under 21 at the time of marriage, the Bond also revealed the name of her father, and I was then able to trace many details of the Newington Hogben family.

I was very fascinated by the information on your web page on the Hogben family, particularly the very strong Lyminge connection. I am wondering if you possibly have any information or could perhaps put me In touch with someone who may have information on the Lyminge John Hogben (my great great grandfather). Unfortunately, I have no other details other than those connected with his marriage.

William Hogben (father of Jane) was also a farmer, at Arpinge farm, Newington. He had a son (whom I think was his firstborn, in 1793) whose name was also John, and who farmed nearby at West Arpinge farm. He was listed as a farmer under the Newington-next-Hythe entry in Kelly's Directory of Kent.

I realize that there were many Hogbens in Lyminge around the time period in which I am currently interested. I have searched the parish baptism register for the period 1795-1800, but there was more than one John Hogben baptized in that parish during those years. If I were able to identify the particular farm at which he worked, it may give me a lead on identifying his parents and perhaps a long and very interesting line. I am also working on the theory that there may be a connection with the name Iggulden But so far have been unable to discover why my Great Grandfather should have been christened as such. The name has so far not emerged in my researches into the Newington Hogbens.

Whether you are able or not to assist me in my researches, I would like to thank you for making available on the internet the very interesting and fascinating information on the Hogben name.

I have very little information regarding my grandfather's family. Here's what I have, for what it's worth.
His name was James and he was born on the 28th May 1871 in Canterbury.
He died on the 24th Dec in Margate, Kent.He married Matilda Reynolds on 25th Oct 1895.
His father was George Hogben born in 1832 at Wickambreux. He married Eliza Spicer on 9th Dec. 1854.at Bridge, Kent.

Not much to go on, I'm afraid. But he may slot in somewhere. The family was a farming family, labourers mostly. We were over in the UK last year and we visited Wickambreux, a charming village but very much up-market these days. We also went to Old Wives Lees, where Matilda came from.

Peter Brenchley < BRENCHLEYP@aol.com)

Have just come across your general request for Hogbens on the Kentnet. I have been researching Brenchleys in Kent on and off for about 35 years and found the following Hogben on my database, who you may not have a note of :- 1812 - Marriage Licence granted to Edward Brenchley, widower, of Sittingbourne and Esther Hogben, widow, of Boughton under Blean (about 6-8 miles WNW of Canterbury). There were no children to the marriage (if it occurred) as Edward was about 61 at the time - he died in 1825. The children of his first marriage to Mary Smith in 1776 went on to become a very successful family. Mary died in 1807.

Hope it helps,
Peter Brenchley

I found another ref to Hogben on a wild card search:-

Will - Centre for Kentish Studies, ref. arch cant 106 208

The last will of me ELIZABETH BRENCHLEY of Faversham, Kent widow made the 8 March 1821.
I appoint William Hogben of Faversham, carpenter sole executor and give him and his wife my whole estate.

Witness William Chapman Morgan and James Ward.

Probate 22 October 1822 by Wlliam Hogben.

The above is a precis I think.

As far as Esther goes I haven't any more info except to say that she was not born a Hogben as she is described as 'widow' in the marriage licence. I haven't got a death relating to Esther Brenchley before 1852 or a marriage after 1825.

Regards
Peter B
