Diary of Rev. George Hogben - Part 1

Got Jokes?

Diary of Rev. George Hogben's immigration to Australia

Day 1

May 8th, 1875

My diary from leaving the home of my boyhood to take a journey into a far country, viz. Adelaide, South Australia.

In the all wise and over-ruling providence of God, I have been led to leave Ashford in company with my wife and dear little one, my brother Richard, my sister Alice, and my friend Albert Wyle. Now I am on my way to embark for Port Adelaide, South Australia. We left Ashford by the first train this morning in good spirits, though the parting with friends and relatives gave feelings that in my heart will not easily be forgotten. Above all, to say good-bye to my father seemed to snap a cord that I till then did not think was so strong.

We arrived at Charing Cross where our dear brother Geo. Richardson met us and saw us safely in cabs for Paddington-Great Western station. Arrived there we found that the next train we could take for Plymouth did not leave till 8:10 p.m. so we had a day's waiting at Paddington - we were a little disappointed at first but as we left Ashford determining to take matters as they come and make the best of all the bad jobs we came across, we managed to keep our pecker up' and the day passed tolerably comfortably.

We fell in with a young man named Charles Ballard at Ashford station who was going on the same journey as ourselves - he proved to be an agreeable companion and remained with us all day..

At 8:10 in the evening we started for Plymouth - 'Twas a long ride and we managed to get a nap or two, but as the compartment we were in was filled we could not get a comfortable sleep.

Our dear little Alice was a good girl, giving us very little trouble and noise.
