Diary of Rev. George Hogben - Part 2

Something funny's going on!

Diary of Rev. George Hogben's immigration to Australia

Day 2

May 9th, 1875

On Sunday morning at 4:45 am we arrived at Plymouth - stayed in the waiting room till nearly 7 o'clock, when we hired cabs and went to the Emigrants Depot - Luggage and al.

Here we found everything very strange and of course very different to the comfortable home we had left - our first feelings were rather indescribable but I may just say for myself I felt anything but joyful and anywhere then on the delectable mountains. However, we were not alone for others had arrived and were in the same happy position - in strange place and among strange people. We soon found some friends with who we had our meals. Everything was very clean indeed - food good and plentiful supply: sleeping apartments clean but none too large. We had some breakfast and a wash then were allowed to go into the town. we wended our way to Mr. Aldis' chapel in George Street (Baptist). That gentleman did not preach and the one that did was not lively enough to keep me awake, for not having had any sleep the night before I was very heavy and felt very uncomfortable during the service.

In the evening a service was held in the young man's mess room but I stayed with my wife in our room. After the service, Alice came up and asked us to go over to sing as some were remaining after the service for that purpose. Albert playing his flute and we had a nice little sing together. About 9 o'clock we are preparing for bed, feeling thankful that our Heavenly Father had been thus far faithful and unchangeable friend.
